Meet Mr Bateman

Updated: Jan 8, 2022

Mr Bateman is the fictional embodiment of YSL’s Pour Homme. A fierce and complex citrus aromatic fragrance in the vein of things like Dior’s Eau Sauvage and Armani’s Eau Pour Homme. A sour, lemon dominant scent that briefly features in and draws parallels with the great Mary Harron film, American Psycho, and its main protagonist, Patrick Bateman. An unmistakably masculine perfume from 1971 which looks ahead to the ‘80s and feels right at home in the decade.

The year is 1987. Location: Manhattan, New York. Home of one Patrick Bateman. A rich and steely New York Investment Banker, caught up in a world of yuppie excess. An exercise fanatic and conspicuous consumer whose interests extend only to the decadent things in life like his luxury apartment and the expensive drape suits he wears to work.

To look at Mr Bateman is to stare into the soul of a most uncompromising man. A stony and chiselled face with piercing eyes that sting you like lemon zest.

Those not scared off by these eyes will find themselves drawn in further still. Captivated by the sweaty perspiration of Mr Bateman’s soapy-fresh athletic body and the herbal wafts of his morning breath.

Behind those piercing eyes lies a bitter and solemn heart. A dirty heart made to look clean like freshly picked herbs rinsed of all their soil yet harbouring insects still.

At his core, Mr Bateman is a primitive man, led on by a carnal lust for power and dominance. A quietly sinister man who lurks in the background and pounces unannounced like a civet cat hunting its next meal.

There is no sweetness in Mr Bateman. Just dry aloofness. A traditional sort masculinity that commands respect yet keeps you at a distance. Such is Mr Bateman. A fitting tribute to YSL’s first fragrance for men.
