Mr Jaipur is the fictional embodiment of Boucheron’s Jaipur Homme: an amber spicy fragrance with warming notes of cinnamon, cardamom and benzoin. A rich and opulent scent themed on and inspired by India’s Pink City.
The year is 1998. Location: Jaipur. India’s Pink City. A colourful, majestic capital of textiles, crafts, jewellery. Home to busy markets and centuries old palaces. Where manic buses and crazed motorcyclists meet idling camels and laidback rickshaw drivers.
At the centre of it all is a man encapsulating Jaipur’s regal side: Mr Jaipur. A French jeweller, living and working in the city, specialising in the very thing that Jaipur is famous for: gemstones. Which he shapes, sculpts and polishes from a small shop in Johri Bazaar: a prominent jewellery avenue, teeming with workshops and emporiums.
Like others in the gem trade, Mr Jaipur is a man of meticulous structure and detail. A discerning and balanced character who loves his work and lives for routine. A true pioneer of Jaipur’s artisanal way of life.
On first impressions, Mr Jaipur can come across as harsh. His lively conversation openers sharp and punchy like a squeeze of lemon over freshly crushed cardamom. Dig a little deeper though, and a whole different side to his character reveals itself. An exotic warmth, sweet as cinnamon and sensual as jasmine.
Those who’ve known Mr Jaipur for a while will tell you what a classy, complex person he is. How his sweet nature is tempered by an earthy appreciation for the serious things in life: politics, history, family, philosophy. An introvert at heart, Mr Jaipur rarely gives too much of himself away, a dusty mystique enveloping him like the city’s own atmosphere.
At 42 years old, Mr Jaipur is neither young nor old, but grounded. An experienced and knowledgeable man with a reverence for old world values, yet an openness for new possibilities. A turn of the century craftsman in what is soon to be a brave new world.
