Mr Rugged is a fictional character based on Ralph Lauren’s Safari for Men: a warm and spicy woody aromatic that transports wearers to the Africa Savanna. This was one of the first fragrances I ever encountered as a child and is one that I strongly associate with my step-dad, Henry – whose name also happens to be our protagonist’s.
From the glorious golden grasslands of Kenya’s Masai Mara comes a handsome and adventurous safari driver by the name of Mr Rugged. A bold and intelligent man, whose principal mission in life is to take people on a journey.
Now in his 50s and living out his later years in a tranquil bush home, Mr Rugged enjoys a rich existence in what is unquestionably one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
Real name Henry, Mr Rugged is a character of great strength and complexity, whose zingy hospitality gives way to a warm heart and a deep sense of maturity. Originally from the UK,he moved out to Kenya in the early '90s and has remained there ever since. Captivated by the landscape and the animals that roam it.
When you meet Mr Rugged, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the presence of a great explorer, with his riding boots, khaki wear and animal skin hat. A smell of perspiration about him, his voice dry and growly like the Serengeti plains.
A safari ride with Mr Rugged is like no other. Ducking and weaving as he does through the open grassland, the scorching sun beating down on his bronzed forehead and sinewy arms.
While no longer the vigorous man he once was, Mr Rugged certainly hasn’t lost any of his charm. He might be old. He might be slightly out of step. But’s that’s all part of his appeal. An ageing powerhouse, dignified as ever, still holding his own.
