Meet Mr Verdant

By Anton Constantinou

Mr Verdant is a fictional character based on Creed’s illustrious Green Irish Tweed: an iconic green fragrance from 1985 with energising notes of lemon, verbena and violet, smoothed out by a beautiful base of sandalwood and ambergris. A perfectly balanced scent, best suited for spring.

The year is 1985. The setting: a well-to-do countyside area. It’s early spring and Mr Verdant - an affluent businessman in his 30s - is holidaying with his family somewhere green and lush. A provincial landscape recently emerged from winter.

It’s early morning and Mr Verdant and his family are off for a walk. A brisk stroll in nature. Mr Verdant - a keen hiker and lover of outdoor pursuits - is dressed for the occasion and leading the way. A seasoned walker in a tweed jacket and wellington boots.

The atmosphere is fresh and dewy. Grass is growing all around and a smell of verbena hangs in the air: a lemony-fresh floral mist, bright and lustruous. The family walk for several miles admiring the landscape. Pristine meadows, rolling hills, beautiful hanging trees.

They pause for lunch at a cafe. One of those cute, family-run restaurants that you find mostly in villages and small towns. The cafe has a floral theme and greets with a purple brightness: vibrant bouquets of lavender, violet and geranium, some adorning its tables, others lining its shelves and windows.

The combination gives the atmsophere a soft powderniness. A light sweetness which, rather than compete with the smell of meadows and fresh grass, adds to it and make it more dimensional.

After lunch, the family continue their walk and encounter a different aroma. A musky saltiness that let’s them know water’s nearby. Mr Verdant, still leading the walk and curious as to the source of the smell, leads the family down a narrow path and towards a clearing. “The sea is this way” he says “Follow me”.

Their walk leads them to the beach. A green and leafy beach, with big trees and grass running right up to the shoreline. Mr Verdant, admiring the scenery, lifts his nose to the air and breaths in. “I could get used to this place” he remarks.
