Top fragrant TV shows to binge-watch

Updated: Jan 9, 2022

If, like me, you’re as into fragrances as you are television programmes, then the following TV shows could be well up your street. So, sit back, relax, stick the telly on and give these four a nose:

The Sniffer

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

The Sniffer is a Russian language detective series about a private detective with an incredible sensible of smell who uses his nose to solve crimes. An olfactory Sherlock Holmes, the Sniffer takes to crime scenes like a dog, creating stories from the smallest pieces of evidence and hunting down even the most careful of criminals. In one episode, he’s even given the nickname “The Dog Man”.

Whilst classified as a drama, The Sniffer packs its fair share of comedy elements. Everything from a hysterical ex-wife, to a sleazy sidekick who gorges on burgers and hits on every woman he meets. Like I say, the show is a lot of fun!

Perfume

Where to watch: Netflix

Perfume, a German miniseries inspired by the 2006 hit film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (and book by the same name), follows a missing persons investigation and a strange case of murder involving the removal of a victim’s scent glands.

At only one season long, the show packs a lot of punch for a short series and takes viewers on a tantalising olfactory journey, starting with description of ambergris and concluding with a demonstration of perfume as its most “captivating”. A fragrance enthusiast’s answer to Twin Peaks, Perfume is essential watching for those who like their murder mysteries on the “skanky” side.

Mad Men

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

Now you’re probably thinking, what’s a drama series about ad men doing on a list of perfume-themed shows? Well, as well as being a cultural study into advertising in the ‘60s, Mad Men is also a looking glass into fragrance wearing of the time and features many a passing reference to classic fragrances that we know and love.

Famous perfumes which get a mention in the show include Guerlain’s Shalimar and Chanel’s Number 5. The programme has even spawned various online discussions about what fragrances different characters in the show might wear.

Emily in Paris

Where to watch: Netflix

Emily in Paris is the latest offering from Sex and the City creator, Darren Star, and centres on a 20-something American girl living and working in Paris, who takes up a job with a French marketing firm. While there, Emily is introduced to Antoine Lambert – owner of perfume company, Maison Lavaux – whose fragrance collection just screams luxury.

Emily in Paris has all the ingredients we come to expect from a good TV series: great filming, nice character development, a fun score, and, more importantly, PERFUME STUFF.

So, there you have it: my top fragrant TV shows to binge-watch this Christmas. Have I missed anything? Leave a comment below and keep the discussion going.
