Wandering wafts: Stables and vapes

Updated: Sep 14

By Anton Constantinou

Autumn is here. Temperatures have started to cool, leaves are falling and the first of the season’s conkers have arrived.

My commute to work is continuing to throw up its usual barrage of smells: smog, coffee, fast food, the occasional waft of cigarette smoke.

A smell of urine hit my nose the other day as I was walking down Wardour Street. I’m not sure where the smell was coming from but I’m guessing the urinal on the street - I pass one on my walk to the office.

Vapes are pretty inescapable these days, especially in London. The smell of them doesn’t bother me much, but I do wonder what they do to the body. I brushed past a couple vaping the other day and whatever they were smoking smelt great!

Call me weird but the smell of turpentine really gets me going. I got a big ole waft of it the other day walking past a building site near Regent’s Park. Damn, that shit smelt good!

Anyone who loves the smell of horses will know how satisfying the aroma of a stables can be. I’ve a stables near me, which recently reopened, and the smell it gives the street it’s on is magical: a mix of grass, hay and banyard funk.
